Es wird nicht mehr lange dauern, dann sind die letzten Zeitzeugen gestorben. All jene, die den grauenhaftesten Zivilisationsbruch der Menschheitsgeschichte auf die eine oder andere Art miterlebt haben, werden nicht mehr aus erster Hand berichten können. Umso stärker sind die Historiker gefragt, wenn es darum geht, dass die Shoah in der Erinnerungskultur nicht zu irgendeinem Ereignis unter vielen, dass Auschwitz nicht zum Abstraktum verkommt. Weit entfernte Geschichte, die uns, die Nachgeborenen, kaum noch etwas angeht.
Sybille Steinbacher, die seit Mai dieses Jahres die erste explizite Holocaust-Professur Deutschlands an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main innehat, meint, die Gegenwartsbezogenheit müsse stets ein zentrales Anliegen der Zeitgeschichte sein. „Ich finde es wichtig, dass die zeitgeschichtliche Forschung auch eine gesellschaftliche Aufgabe übernimmt. Geschichts- und Demokratievermittlung gehören definitiv zusammen.“ Gerade vor dem Hintergrund, dass geschichtsvergessene Antisemiten anno 2017 auf Bestsellerlisten unterwegs sind, ist es unbedingt geboten, die Shoah, ihre Ursachen und Folgen, bis zur letzten Quelle zu beforschen, um zu verhindern, dass sich ein vergleichbares Totalversagen der Menschlichkeit jemals wiederholen kann…
